The Ukrainian Parliament, the Verkhovna Rada, announced the adoption of the Draft Law No. 5839 “On State Regulation of Genetic Engineering Activities and State Control over the Circulation of Genetically Modified Organisms and Genetically Modified Products to Ensure Food Security” according to a release.
The new law allows Ukrainian legislation to be in line with the European Union’s GMO legislation. The document is based on the eight major acts of the EU law on GMOs.
The release shared, “The law introduces European mechanisms for the state registration of GMOs and bans their cultivation and circulation. The law also establishes the use of labels that state, ‘with GMOs’, ‘without GMOs’, ‘produced from GMO raw materials’ which is in accordance with EU legislation.”
The new law will help to make GMO regulations more transparent and efficient, including for the rules of doing business with GMOs. It will go into force the day after it’s been published and comes into effect three years after that,
